Mise-en-scène. Doc Martin clip.

During the clip, the setting is what is most important to the audience. This is because it shows the audience where they are and what it is like in the scenes they are in.

In the first scene the rooms are shown to be dark and full of old fashioned furniture, this suggests that the houses must be old tradition and not modern like the houses in the city. Including the background of the house, the characters; The father plumber and son plumber both wore old fashioned overalls while plumbing, this shows that they must be from the countryside as there's not much modern technology or clothes. Compared to this, the doctor seems to come in wearing a smart suit which is represented as being smart and clean unlike the overalls of the plumbers. This may also do with the fact that the doctor may come from an upper class background, giving him more advantages of having modern clothes and technology compared to the villagers. Later through this scene a young girl which is thought to be the doctors assistant due to the way he responds to her, seems to have her hairstyle in a more unique way than a responsible hair style. Her clothes are also shown to be an old 80's style, this shows that the village may not have enough resources.

During the second scene, more scenery is shown of the village itself. In this second scene, the village is shown to be styled like an old victorian style due to the fact that the paths are old cobble stones instead of concrete and the houses are cottages instead of flats like in the city. The reason the viewers believe that the village is by the sea without the sound effects is because the cottages are made of stones instead of smooth material. Another style that gives this away is that the place seems very breezy and all that can be seen is hills and washed away cliffs. The sea shop is also seen near the end when the doctor approaches the police station. What really stands out in this scene is that most people seem to be more relaxed as they take their time with what they're doing and that not a single car seems to move. This shows that the village is very peaceful and show no reaction to high activity.

Continuing through the second scene, the village seems to have nothing to hide or secrets, this is proven when the women seems to just ask for a prescription while walking down the street with the doctor. The doctor also seems to be holding a prescription pad inside his own jacket. The last point which shows the difference between the village and the city is when the doctor approaches the women who seems to wear farming clothes and gloves. She is seen to just pick up unbundled crates of fresh vegetables that may have just been collected from the market. Unlike the city who would have cardboard boxes wrapped in plastic to keep anything from getting into the food.
