Regional Identity Homework.

Analyse the advert provided in terms of Regional Identity.

Regional identity is the identity in which either the people or the town itself show.

In the first scene, a master shot of the child opening this old fashioned gate was shown. By having an old gate which is falling apart but also the scenery being mountains and over grown fields, this advert shows that this action must take place away from big city's in the open, but in a more village styled place surrounded by nature. To let the audience know what is happening with the little child, a shot reverse shot was used to show the thoughts being swapped between the boy and cow. The medium close up shot was mainly used to show the characters expression as he became serious with what he was doing. The non - diegetic music played which would be the mood music, was to give the audience the feeling and thoughts that the boy was up to no good. At the end of this scene, the master shot was used to show the child hushing the cow through the fence. The synchronous sound was used to let the audience continue their perspective of the child not being up to good behaviour.

In the second scene, all the action was made longer to show the audience the region that these characters live in. Unlike the first scene, the clothes from the Mise-en-scène were shown to reveal that the region must be in the country side as the clothes seem to be shown as old mix and matched rags unlike the 'fashion' shown in the city of neat brand new clothes. This could also lead to the fact that the family must be working class as they live on the farm with one cow and seem to have not enough money to buy brand new expensive clothing. To begin the first scene, the child was shown to be running away from the camera as it is shown in a long shot. In the surroundings of this long shot, there is shown to be a huge stone built house and overgrown bushes unlike there is in the city. The child is also shown to be shouting for his mother as he runs along the non - man built paths.

Further through out the second scene, the camera was shown to appear behind a shadowed character as the child approached showing a fake fear. A medium close up shot was then revealed to show the audience his mother, in her old ragged clothing. The medium close up shot was also used to reveal her disappointment with her son for letting the cow out of the field. In this shot alone, the audience were also aloud to see the regional identity again as the shot shows their own stone house and wall but also the wooden door which is shown behind the mother character. This continues the feeling of an old farm house in a run down village up in the mountains. The last shot taken for this scene would be the medium close up shot, as the boy speaks about how he will return the cow himself. The characters in the clip also speak in a foreign language which reveals the region to be in run down county with alot of mountians and overgrown plants in the hot weather.

During the third scene, there was more action shown. This is because the camera shots for the first few seconds was individual wide shots of the scenery as the child would run down hills and across paths. In the first wide shot, there was shown to be a man riding upon a donkey with a lot of packages attached, this shows that the region do not have technology and fuel operated vehicles like we do in the city. This shows that the region is extremely old tradition. The next shot was shown to be taken in a farmers field with the huge old tree and long grass. To continue from this shot, the synchronous sound of bells ringing interrupted the non - diegetic sound of mood music to lead onto a close up shot of the bell moving. This shot was used to show that in that region, the bell was always rung in a serious matter or for a religious term. The religious term would fit this bell ringing, as a medium shot was used to reveal an old fashioned vicar pointing in the direction of the cow. This costume also shows that the region does not follow the stereotypical vicar dress sense like the city does.

Further through the third scene, there was close up shot of the child's feet as he ran down the steps. These steps also shown the regional identity of the place, as the steps were old and crumbled away as well as being made out of slate and stone unlike the concrete steps we see everyday. Continuing on from this shot, another close up shot was shown of an old women as she shown to using the old tradition of using a paddle stick to beat the carpets of their dirt. This reveals that no technology must be around due to the fact that old fashioned ways are being taken place. As well as the old women beating the carpet, she seemed to shout out to the boy to hurry up as he ran quicker down the wide screen shots to the town.

During the fourth scene, a master shot was shown. In this shot, there was shown to be an old run down shack building with the butcher covered in blood, sharpening two sharp blades. The cow is also shown to be standing infront unaware of what is happening. This shows that this region do not show any attention to butchers sharpening knives outside their building unlike they do in the city. This shows that they're attitude is very different to the city's. Continuing on from that shot, as the audience become scared a close up shot was used to show the hygiene differences of an every day butcher in the city compared to a butchers hygiene their. But also to show the emotion he has before the boy walks the cow away. During the begining of that scene, the diegetic but also synchronous sound of the knives rubbing against eachother were played to frighten the audience even more but also give a contrast to the mood music which was played throughout most of the scenes.

Near the end of the fourth scene, the boy was shown to be taking the cow all the way back up into it's original field. In these different shots, the region is shown to have very small rocky paths but also alot of farm animals, as the paths are covered in sheep. This alone shows the audience that the region is an independant working class village that has been seperated from the bigger cities. To end the fourth scene, a master shot was used to show the mother praising her son. In the scenery, the wooden fence and stone walls were shown again to keep the cow in the long grassed fields.

On the last scene, a master shot was shown as the women would walk in to the kitchen to get the prize inwhich she treats her son with. The inside of the house is shown to be dark due to no electricity being provided in the village. The inside walls are also shown to be dull and plain as the only things that lighten up the house are the old wooden objects and frames scattered around the small room. The medium close up shot was then used on the young boy as the old patterened bowl was placed infront of him to advertise the product that the company are actually selling. As a asynchronous sound is played which is the phone ringing, the master shot is used once again to contrast the new technology against the old fashioned house. This shows a slight change in the region as it contrasts the old with the new.

In conclusion, I believe that this advert was based in an independent old fashioned village in the mountians of Greece. Who show no need to use technology like the people in the cities do. The phone was used to create a contrast between the old days and the new to advertise how the product still is the same today.

Doc Martin Clip. - Editing.

Throughout the Doc Martin clip, there was no transitions used. Each scene was straight forward cut into the next.

During the first scene, there was an eye line match between the Doctor, Father Plumber and Son Plumber while the talk happened. This was also taken in a long take, to expand the scene into a longer situation as the conversation developed between the classes of each person, but also to show the change in status when the conversation deepened. After this conversation started to end, a action match was shown as the clip lead from showing the Father plumber leaning down, to show the father plumber fiddling with the actual sink itself.

Further through the first scene, the young receptionist is seen to approach, while giving a eye line match with the Doctor as they spoke. This then progressed onto a stressed out Doctor giving an eye line match to the dog as they both resembled stressed emotions towards each other. Never the less, the eye line match was used continuously through out the discussions of the characters till the second scene.

Moving onto the second scene, there is shown to be an action shot between the clips. This action shot, shows the Doctor walking from outside the police station into the police station room itself. This editing skill keeps the clips flowing properly, one into another. Once again the eye line match was used near the end of this scene, between the Police Officer and dog to show confusion and tension in the atmosphere.

On the third scene, the eye line match shots continue through out

Regional Identity. Doc Martin Clip.

Regional Identity, is the identity in which either the people or the town itself show, to reveal the regional identity.

This Doc Martin clip pacifically shows this through out all the different scenes.

During the first scene, the clothing was compared between the Doctor himself and the workers who sit below him. This shows the regional identity because it reveals the Doctor himself coming from a city with his expensive clothes and high statuses background, while the workers come from a small village due to the lack of brand new overalls with their companies logo on them. As well as the difference between the clothes,  the room indicated that the house is an old fashioned countryside house, this shows that the regional identity must be the countryside due to the lack of an updated room.

Another few things which stand out as regional identity in the first scene is, when the pipe bursts. This example shows that when the pipe bursts, the Doctor makes a huge fuss of getting this to stop and becomes stressed like an stereotypical city person does, while the Father Plumber seems to continue to be occupied with eating his sandwich instead of stopping the flow. This shows that the countryside villagers are very laid back and relaxed even during stressful situations. The last point that stands out in the first scene would be the Receptionist, this is because she appears with no uniform but also an 'exotic' hairstyle. This shows that the countryside see no importance in labelling people with their work as it is an everyday job which clearly has no extreme activity in it.

The second scene also contained main points which stood out to show the regional identity. The first one would be the fact that the houses are old styled and upon a narrow path'ed slope, which are also shown to be empty. This once again shows a countryside region, due to the fact city's are more up to date and extremely busy unlike the countryside which shows only a rare amount of people walking at once and a more historic background. The audio in this clip also reveals the Diegetic sound which is known to be asynchronous due to the fact that the noise cannot be seen by the object making it. This would be the seagulls and wind. These audio sounds reveal that the countryside must be close to the seaside or cliff. Later during that scene, the police station is shown to be based inside an converted house, this shows that the countryside must have less crime rates in the region than a city, this is because the Police station is not shown in a stereotypical way, and covered in police vehicles.

Homework 12th September.

Select a five minute approx. clip of a T.v. drama from you tube and do a textured analysis using shot types and sound types but also mis-en-scène. Also include the video clip at the start of the post and images at relevant points through the analysis.

The selected t.v. drama I chose was an selected 2 minute and 45 second clip of the American t.v. show Buffy the Vampire slayer. This t.v. series is registered under the comedy - drama genre. The clip I chose was based the Fool for love clip.

Clip:

To begin my analysis of this Fool for love clip, I will proceed with my initial thoughts on the clip alone. The initial thoughts of this clip was that the emotion between the two different creatures e.g. Human and vampire went against the stereotypical as they bonded. This contrasts against the tension which the clip begins with when Spike approaches the emotional Buffy with a loaded gun from the bushes. By creating the clip to play with these scenes, creates the audiences emotions to change suddenly as their view and opinions constantly change.

In this clip, my focus is based upon the Class and Status of the two characters, but also the Relationship between the two characters. This will be studied and shown through the explanation of the four sections this reveals it in.

First Scene:

To begin the first scene, an Establishing shot of the house was used to show where the action would take place at. This shot stayed for a few seconds until it turned into a Master shot when the female Character Buffy leaves and sits upon the steps. While she approaches the step, the track movement was used to move parallel to the character shown. As she sits upon the step, she shows a lower status even though she comes from a middle class. The close up shot was then used to show the audience her emotion as this would create questions and thoughts between the audience. This would then be followed by a zoom out movement of the camera as it shows a medium close up shot. This gave the chance to use the a handheld camera movement to give the audience a sense of reality as they feel her emotion. To create more focus on the female character shown, the shallow depth focus was used to blur the background out of view.

The sound played during this first clip is the chime playing music. This sound was known to be a Non-diegetic sound due to the fact that it cannot be heard by the actor and is used only for the audience. By using non-diegetic sound the chimes will keep the depressive emotion going against the audience as they start to truly feel what the female character feels as she cries. Later during the first scene the last sound really heard was the faint crying. This sound was an diegetic synchronous sound as it was both heard on scene but also it related to the story as she shown an upset emotion.

The mise-en-scène of this scene shows that the female character is from the middle class status as she wears the basic fashion of clothing in that era but also due to the fact that she lives in a basic fashioned house from the interpretation of just the look of the front of the house itself. By using dark lighting effects on this scene and only keeping certian lights of the house inside turned on, the scene finally shows a night time scenery inwhich keeps the audience questioning on why the female character would dare enter the darkness.

Scene 2:

Mise-en-scène. Doc Martin clip.

During the clip, the setting is what is most important to the audience. This is because it shows the audience where they are and what it is like in the scenes they are in.

In the first scene the rooms are shown to be dark and full of old fashioned furniture, this suggests that the houses must be old tradition and not modern like the houses in the city. Including the background of the house, the characters; The father plumber and son plumber both wore old fashioned overalls while plumbing, this shows that they must be from the countryside as there's not much modern technology or clothes. Compared to this, the doctor seems to come in wearing a smart suit which is represented as being smart and clean unlike the overalls of the plumbers. This may also do with the fact that the doctor may come from an upper class background, giving him more advantages of having modern clothes and technology compared to the villagers. Later through this scene a young girl which is thought to be the doctors assistant due to the way he responds to her, seems to have her hairstyle in a more unique way than a responsible hair style. Her clothes are also shown to be an old 80's style, this shows that the village may not have enough resources.

During the second scene, more scenery is shown of the village itself. In this second scene, the village is shown to be styled like an old victorian style due to the fact that the paths are old cobble stones instead of concrete and the houses are cottages instead of flats like in the city. The reason the viewers believe that the village is by the sea without the sound effects is because the cottages are made of stones instead of smooth material. Another style that gives this away is that the place seems very breezy and all that can be seen is hills and washed away cliffs. The sea shop is also seen near the end when the doctor approaches the police station. What really stands out in this scene is that most people seem to be more relaxed as they take their time with what they're doing and that not a single car seems to move. This shows that the village is very peaceful and show no reaction to high activity.

Continuing through the second scene, the village seems to have nothing to hide or secrets, this is proven when the women seems to just ask for a prescription while walking down the street with the doctor. The doctor also seems to be holding a prescription pad inside his own jacket. The last point which shows the difference between the village and the city is when the doctor approaches the women who seems to wear farming clothes and gloves. She is seen to just pick up unbundled crates of fresh vegetables that may have just been collected from the market. Unlike the city who would have cardboard boxes wrapped in plastic to keep anything from getting into the food.

Sound from Doc Martin.

While watching the Doc Martin clip, I noticed that there was different sound effects played throughout. The first sound which was noticeable was when the water pipe burst. The sound effect used was a hissing noise to make the water seem more powerful when it was released. After the water pipe exploded another sound which was more gentle was played, this sound was the tools being picked up and dropped as the characters tried to fix the pipe their selves in a less hurried manner. Once these sounds were played the phone rang to show a more uncontrollable situation as they rather chose to answer the phone in a crises.

To top this off the dog barking sound was placed straight in as soon as Doc Martin pointed out the dog had somehow appeared. I believe that the dog effect was only played to show a distressed dog as the scene was based on a tragedy. Once the scene was changed to Doc Martin walking up the street with the dog, a light hearted and cheery piano based music was played all the way to the police station. During this walk light sounds were played such as the seagulls calling each other and the wind. These would have been used to give an effect upon the audience of where this village was.

Another light sound was the door ringing as the women walked out, this could have been used to catch the audiences attention as a new character appeared to talk to Doc Martin. While in the police station the piano music only played lightly at the beginning while the conversation started off smoothly, this stopped when the Doctor raised his voice. At the end of this clip after the Doctor finished shouting and left the office, the dog whined. The dog whining can show fear and confusion which impacts the audience as they believe that the tragedy may have ended but something may be leading up to the rising action.

During the Clip of Doc Martin, two different types of sounds were played. These were; Diegetic sound meaning that any sound from whats on screen or off screen plays with what is in the story. But also Non - Diegetic which is sounds played that the characters cannot hear and it does not occur with the story line.

The Diegetic sounds played were the tools moving around, the exaggerated sounds of pillows being ruffled and the cup being placed. The other sounds related was the water pipe bursting. All these were in the beginning scene of Doc Martin to create an atmosphere on the audience to believe that they was there with all the actions happening. Later in the clip the phone started ringing while the sound of a dog barking was played before seeing the dog. This was a tragedy being shown as it built up to the raising action of the next scene. On the next scene the diegetic sounds played was the sea gulls calling to each other as well as the wind, this linked in with the story line because it revealed a scenery and place in which the village was to the audience. The door bell ringing when the new character entered is also counted as it caught the attention of the audiences to wonder who the new character will be. Later on throughout that scene the women calling 'Martin' was counted to make the situation sound bad as he walked over immediately. This keeps the audience on the edges of their seats. Before the walk down to the lady as he passed the school another diegetic sound was played even though this was exaggerated. This is when the teacher begins to cut the paper, even though he was on the other side of the glass, the sound was played gently enough to hear.

While these Diegetic sounds were played, the non - diegetic sounds were played either on individual times or together. The non - diegetic sounds played were at the beginning scene when the shot was bought up upon the characters, this sound would catch attention and let the scene come on smoothly. The same sort of music that was played at the beginning of the scene was also played when the next scene of the Doctor walking down played to keep a light hearted atmosphere with the audience. After the beginning of the clip another sort of non - diegetic sound was played. This sound was a dramatic sound of pianos as the Doc approached the dog. This caused tension within the audience.

Another two types of sound played are Synchronous sound which occurs with the action on the screen, and Asynchronous sound which is sound that occurs off screen.

The synchronous sounds played during the first scene would be when the pipe burst, this gives the water once again a strong affect to create the tragedy. But also another synchronous sound would be when the dog came running in and continued to bark throughout half the scene. During the second scene the women shouting counts as a synchronous sound as it shows the women after.

The asynchronous sounds played during the first scene would be the tools clanging together and being used to fix the pipe, even those these were not seen the audience was able to tell that the pipe was being fixed due to the sound effects. The other sound that was not so important but resembled a busy room would be when the cup was exaggeratedly placed down on the side.  During the second scene, there was more asynchronous sounds being played. These sounds were the seagulls calling each other as well as the wind and the sea. This then sets off the scenery. As well as the sea gulls and the wind effects, when the doctor passes by the school, the sounds of children playing were played. This makes the audience automatically believe the building being shown was a school. This helps the next part which relates the teacher to the doctor as it smoothly goes from one part too another.

Shot types in Doc Martin.

At the beginning of the Doc Martin clip, the Master shot was used to show the statuses of each character shown. The way this was done was by showing the Doc walking in, while the father sat at a lower level and the son at an even lower level by kneeling. Once this master shot was shown to let the audience understand the action that was going on, the close up shot was used. When using the close up shot, the actors eyes were shown to look up or down at the other character, even though the characters were not shown the audience was able to tell by the directions of the eyes, while this conversation continued. The medium shot was quickly followed through, as the younger boy which seemed to have the lowest status finally stood up to show the same status as the doctor. This only happened when the conversation deepened and the younger boy seemed to show a more higher knowledge in the topic than his own father did. After this, when the pipe was shown to explode, the master shot was used briefly to get a limited action shown. Once the incident was shown, the shot was followed by a medium close up shot of the doctor shouting. By using a medium close up of the shouting, the shot was able to show the audience the doctors reaction but also feel it as well. When the shouting had stopped, the shot used was the Establishing shot. This shot was only based upon the doctor walking up the village pathway and past the 'Beach shop'. This shot would show the audience what the village was like and where while also using audio clips to hint this in. This would be the seagull noises. To lead this action on, the clip was shown to use a medium close up shot of the doctor as he seemed to show a more aggressive behaviour towards the police man. This shot then was followed by a shot reverse shot as it flickered between both the police man and Doctor as they continued the subject. Once this was all finished up, the clip showed a extreme long shot of the doctor 'storming' down a hill towards the school window. This was used for a lead up to the close up shot of the doctor showing emotions towards the teacher inside the school.

Second thoughts of Doc Martin clip.

My second initial thoughts of the Doc Martin clip is that there is still a high difference between the classes. As the villagers come from a working class background and the Doctor seems to be from a Middle/ Higher class background. During the clip it was shown that the villagers seem to be more entertained by gossip with theirs or other peoples lives, while Doc Martin seems to be more occupied with the incident which happens. The part in the clip which shows this fact is when the sinks pipe bursts. While the sinks pipe is shown to be pouring out a lot of water which floods the floors, the working class villagers are shown to be answering the phone and having conversations about what should be said, the doctor has the main problem with trying to fix the pipe and control the situation by shouting at the villagers what they should be really doing. The reason this shows that the classes are different between these people is that the Doctor shows a more controlled behaviour and keeps his mind focused, this would be because he was bought up with a behaviour and a more careful childhood. The villagers on the other hand come from a working background, so problems will be shown as an everyday activity which soon becomes something small and simple. Another difference is between both the Doctor and the villagers is that the Doctor knows what he has to do in most problems due to the fact that he has an well prepared and educated background, even though the Doctor does not specialise in plumbing, he tried his best to keep the mess to a minimum. The villagers on the other hand show no clue in what to do with a burst pipe, as they become easily distracted and try all the wrong ways to try and fix the pipe.

Initial thoughts of Doc Martin clip.

My initial thoughts of the Doc Martin clip that was shown was, that the classes in which certain people are placed in are shown to have a high difference compared to Doc Martins. This clip shows that were Doc Martin has an educated background of medical experience and rules, like shown when he speaks to one of the villagers about how he may not go against the rules and just 'write out' a prescription to her like the old doctor did, the villagers are shown to not care about how rules are set and that they will continue to go through their lives like they have been bought up to be like. As it is also shown in the clip, Doc Martin seems to have different expectations with the accidents caused and what should really be done when this happens. The evidence that would back this up would be when the sink pipe burst. The doctor seemed to make a massive fuss with keeping the pipe covered and stop the leakage while the other villager seemed to simply brush it off and leave it.
